affirmation sweeping the nation this morning. how one father is hoping to change the world with one converation with his daughter. good morning i'm alyssa deitsch. and i'm maria silva. welcome to fox5 news this morning. we continue to follow breaking news. fire crews are battling a three alarm fire at a shopping center near rancho and washington. fox5's peter dawson is live on the scene with an update for us on the status of the fire. las vegas fire and rescue said they are battling a two- alarm fire at a shopping plaza friday morning. crews responded to the incident at 2:48 a.m. at twin lakes plaza near rancho drive and washington avenue. according to the department, arriving firefighters found heavy flames and

councilman-- ricki barlow-- is under investigation over campaign contributions. federal prosecuters and the f-b-i are also looking at allegations of wire and mail fraud. barlow's defense attorney says the councilman knows he is being investigated and doesn't believe he did anything wrong. a six-year-old boy wrote a touching letter to president obama... asking if the little syrian boy seen in a haunting photograph could come live with him.. president obama shared alex's letter at a refugee summit... and now you can hear it in the boy's own words. incue: "dear pres. obama..." outq: "... alex. six years old." rt: 1:35 (ends on still frame) closed captioning will resume a florida woman

dangerous situation... after her purse was snatched at a gas station. she jumped on the thief's car to get him to stop... while he drove off. todd tongen spoke to the woman about the scary encounter. (nat sound) "it was in the blink of an eye. what is this guy doing in my car? what is he doing?" the surveillance video shows he was stealing her purse, and once janelle della-libera realized she was

broad daylight on a saturday afternoon while pumping gas ... she says her instincts took over. (janelle della- libera/robbed and run over) "i ran around to his side of the car and got on the car in the attempt hoping that he wouldn't drive off. i reached into the driver side. i had my hand on my hand bag and at that point he drove off. so i fell off of the vehicle. when i fell on the floor my legs were out and his driver side tire drove over my foot." janelle was left lying on the ground injured but alert. the dangerous ordeal left janelle with a severely sprained ankle and lots of bruises. doctors were amazed her leg wasn't shattered. on crutches, she will be out of work for a few weeks but she will heal. meanwhile, that up-close encounter with the lead- footed thief in a silver cadillac is something she will never forget. (janelle della- libera/robbed and run over) "he just kept cursing and calling me names in an attempt to scare me and get me off but i think i literally scared him to death which is what caused him to drive off." after the fact, janelle realizes she should not have fought back. that it

in more local news. our las vegas n- h-l hockey team will soon have a place to practice in summerlin. sports and entertainment and the howard huges corporation signed a 20-year ground lease to build a practice facility. it will be built in downtown summerlin -- near pavilion center drive and griffith peak drive. n-h-l owner bill foley says the facility will help the team work toward bringing home the stanley cup. ground-breaking is set for later this month. the henderson fire department welcoming twelve new cadets to the family. bagpipes and drums the new

to complete 16 weeks of training to make it to their graduation this evening. the ceremony was attended by city officials... fire personnel... family and friends. the addition of these twelve men brings the henderson fire fighter total to 225. the valley is welcoming 850 new americans. they received their citizenship just in time for the election. "now i can vote for once. from now and on. which is, i think, it's a call for everybody in the whole united states that they need to start doing what i'm doing." 64 countries were represented in thursday's ceremony-- including mexico... the philippines... and germany. after the event... organizers took the time to inform the new citizens about their right to vote-- and offer voter registration. according to immigration services... almost one million people have applied for citizenship this

the popular art and music festival is in its fourth year. and will take over part of downtown las vegas. the three day event brings entertainment... that lasts much longer-- as murals and other art fills our city.
